FABRIC COLLAGE MASTERCLASS - HARRY THE HIGHLAND COW OR FREDDY THE FOX

(Or choose a design from a previous workshop)

A two-and-a-half-day masterclass with Jane Jiggens.    £99.  All levels.

Monday, 3 August 10 am to 3:30 pm,     Tuesday afternoon, 18 August 1 pm to 4 pm,     Friday, 28 August 10 am to 3:30 pm

This extended course is designed to help you complete a fabric collage project from start to finish, rather than simply learn a new technique. You will build the skills and confidence to create your own patterns and designs, producing beautiful quilts and textile pieces that can be used as wall art, bags, sewing machine covers, cushions and more. Choose either Harry the Highland Cow or Freddy the Fox or another design from a previous workshop — please enquire at Sew and So’s.

On day one Jane will use one of her designs to demonstrate how she develops a pattern. She will cover choosing a suitable image, understanding what makes a strong design, developing the design, and transferring it onto freezer paper ready for collaging. She will also discuss fabric choice and colour theory to help your design stand out.

Jane will also help you develop your own photograph or image into suitable fabric collage designs using her method. You are welcome to bring photos or pictures of a subject you would like to use, and Jane can advise on its suitability and how to proceed. It may not be possible to begin your own design on the day, but you can use the technique demonstrated in the workshop to continue at home or bring your pattern back on the second day.

Day two focuses on securing the collage to a background. Jane will explain different methods, depending on how you plan to use your collage and the finish you want to achieve. She will demonstrate free-motion quilting, thread painting, using zigzag to cover  edges, machine set-up, and thread selection.

On day three, the focus will be on completing your project. This may include adding binding or flanged binding, hand-stitching extra details such as beads or buttons, and using Inktense pencils or blocks to enhance the design, especially the eyes. You can also continue working on your collage at whatever stage you have reached.

Sew and So’s will be on hand with any haberdashery needs and will also be providing a delicious cake from Earsham Street Café and a bowl of fresh fruit each day to keep you going!
