Butterflies and moths have been popular motifs in art for thousands of years representing life, freedom and strength. Their image is often depicted in jewellery, mixed media artworks and furnishings. They even support us in our crafts - being excellent pollinators, particularly cotton flowers, they boost the cotton harvest! Why not celebrate these beautiful creatures by making your own butterfly or moth, or if time, one of each. The design possibilities are endless, keep it as simple or intricate as you like - Bev will be on hand to advise and help you interpret your designs. She will also bring her scrap boxes for you to rummage through to add that little pop of colour.
Turn your little bits of colourful fabrics into the most amazing flutters – choose iridescent and reflective fabrics to mimic the butterfly’s ability to capture the light, and bright, inky colours for pigment. Using free motion, stitch your design onto the wings imitating the unique patterns of the butterfly’s raised ‘veins’. If you’re not comfortable doing free motion these can be hand sewn or sewn on the machine with a normal foot. Then hand stitch to embellish, along with beads, sequins or whatever you fancy. Complete your butterfly or moth with a velvet body wrapped in wire. The finished project measures 5 x 4 inches but you could make yours larger if you wish.
These make ideal gifts, they can adorn picture frames, glittered up they look great on a Christmas tree, or make a long garland of both……
